Sit n Go Strategy
If you have never played in a Sit n Go
tournament you’ve been missing out on what I think is the best part
of playing Texas holdem online. By playing in Sit and Go tournaments
you will have a lot of fun and gain some great Texas Holdem
tournament poker experience.
You see, Sit n Go’s are like playing
poker at the final table of a big tournament. If you’re like me, you
don’t have the luxury of playing for hours and hours in order to
reach that final table. Sit n Go’s get you right to that final
table.
If you’d like to one day play in
multi-table tournaments then you should use Sit and Go tournaments
as practice for these bigger tournament events. That way you will be
comfortable when you do make it to that final table.
Sit n Go tournaments are great
for skill levels, from beginner to advanced. As a beginner,
for a small buy-in you can participate in a single table Sit
n Go tournament at your favorite online poker room. Of
course, there are also higher buy-in’s that allow you to
compete for higher stakes for advanced tournament players.
The higher the buy-in the better the players.
Typically the top three
finishers win money. There are some beginner tournaments
that even payout to the top 5 finishers.
Interested in giving a Sit and
Go a try? Here is the strategy that I use very
successfully (as of the writing of this, I’m on a five tournament
winning streak!):
I start off playing tight. If I am in early position I’ll stick to
A-A, K-K, Q-Q, and A-K. In middle position I’ll add J-J, A-Q, A-J
and 10-10. In late position I’ll add 9-9 and A-10.
As I get a feel for the players and the
competition I will add additional hands to my game. For example, in
early position as the game goes on I’ll add J-J and A-Q. In middle
position I’ll add 9-9 and A-10.
I will also look to hit straights and
flushes but I don’t overpay to get cards. The pot odds need to be
right for me to chase a flush or straight.
I also don’t give away one
of the most obvious online tells around – using check boxes.
You can
tell when a player has used a check box, because they act
almost immediately after the player in front of them has
acted. Check boxes give
away a lot about online players.
When a player
has checked “raise” it should be obvious to you that they
have a strong hand.
The use of a
checkbox is a good poker tell because the player has already
made a decision on what they are going to do before even
seeing what the others have done.
Remember to pay
close attention to how your opponents act and you will be
able to spot their own individual poker tells.
The most exciting and sometimes
nerve-wracking part of any tournament is when you are playing head
to head with the only other player left. You need to be aggressive
but smart. Don’t play garbage hands and remember that starting hand
values have now increased greatly. Follow my Sit n Go strategy
and you will be successful
when playing Sit n Go tournaments.
