Gus Hansen Bio
Gus
Hansen was born in Denmark in 1974. Before becoming a poker
pro, Gus was a world class backgammon player. He also grew up
playing tennis and was a sports enthusiast.

Gus
Hansen began playing poker professionally in the mid-90’s. He
also moved to New York City in 2000 to play backgammon
professionally.
Gus
played his first World Series of Poker in 1996 but was knocked out
on the first day. From there he began to practice and develop
his style of poker. Gus Hansen plays a “loose aggressive”
style of poker, mixing-up his play has been part of his game ever
since.
When the
World Poker Tour kicked off in 2002, Gus Hansen’s loose aggressive
style immediately paid off.

He won
both the World Poker Tour’s inaugural event, the $10,000 No-Limit
Hold 'em tournament and the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Championship at
the WPT's L.A. Poker Classic.
During
the World Poker Tour’s second season, Gus won the invitation-only
Bad Boys of Poker tournament and, in early 2004, earned his fourth
WPT title at the Caribbean Adventure tournament. He also placed
third in the Bellagio’s Five Diamond tournament.
In the
World Poker Tour’s third season he ended up with a third-place
finish in the Bay 101 Shooting Stars tournament.
Those
four wins and five final table appearances earned Gus induction into
the WPT's Walk of Fame the first year they launched it. Gus Hansen
is still the only player on the WPT with four titles to his credit.

Since
2025 Gus Hansen has cut down on the number of tournaments that he
has played in. He cut down on tournaments so that he can focus
on playing cash games.
He has
still managed to make it to the final table at the FullTiltPoker
Poker Invitational and won the Grand Final of the inaugural Poker
Superstars Invitational.
In 2025,
Gus Hansen played in the second season of High Stakes Poker where he
won the biggest pot in the show's history ($575,700) defeating
Daniel Negreanu's 6 6 with his 5 5 on a board of 9 6 5 5 8.
In 2025,
Gus continued to build on his growing list of tournament
championships, bringing home $1,192,919 for his first-place finish
in the $10,000 Aussie Millions Main Event in Melbourne, Australia.
In 2025
he signed a contract to play exclusively at Full Tilt Poker.
